The Spiritual Community (Sangha)

At the time of the Buddha the spiritual practitioners lived together in a community called the Sangha. The mendicants gave up their worldly lives in order to devote themselves solely to spiritual practice. They chose this lifestyle  to avoid the negative Karma associated with the pursuit of survival. For example, a butcher needs to kill for a living.

Because the Sangha was unable to provide for their own livelihood, they had to rely on the lay people from neighbouring villages for their food and clothing, et cetera. Often these villagers had a son or daughter in the monastery and so they were happy to contribute. They had strong faith in the Buddha’s teachings and so were willing to make offerings believing it is  a powerful way to accumulate merit.

In modern times, except for in remote villages of historically Buddhist countries, this tradition has almost completely disappeared. In the West less than one percent of the population identify as Buddhist. And so if we want the Buddha Dharma to flourish in our lands we need to find new and creative ways to  support sincere practitioners in their pursuit of spiritual qualities.

Giving in generosity to spiritual practitioners (Dana)

In general lay people are too busy with their worldly lives to dedicate a significant amount of time to mediation and other forms of virtue. The Buddha taught that supporting spiritual practitioners is a great way to accumulate karma. And not only that but by encouraging others to develop spiritual qualities we help to make a better world with greater compassion and wisdom. But there is a responsibility for both the sponsor and the practitioner to make sure they have a pure motivation.

Whatever the case dana should never be transactional, as if you are paying for a service or a commodity. The sponsor should should recognise that supporting the development of insight is virtuous and benefit oneself and so isn’t an act of charity. Likewise the meditator should understand they have a responsibility to practise diligently and not squander the resources of their benefactors. Above all else a practitioner should never pretend to be holy or accomplished merely to attract donations from wealthy sponsors.

The Transmission of the Dharma

Naturally if you see the Buddha’s teaching (Dharma) to be something positive you will want to help spread those those for the benefits of others. And giving Dana is a great way to do this. The transmission of the Dharma is twofold; the transmission of the words, and the transmission of realisation.

By supporting organisations that translate the scriptures, such as the 84000 project or The Marpa Translation Society, one can continue the transmission of the Buddha’s words. And by sponsoring a retreatant through the Insight Sangha one can help continue the transmission of realisation.

Help establish a monastery for Drolung Foundation in DRC

Even one cement block or a bag of cement will help build a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in the DRC (Congo). The monastery not only provides an education for the young monastics but also provides their food, accommodation, and even medicine.

The Drolung foundation is an international project to help promote the Buddha Dharma through the three training of discipline, intelligence and meditation. With a permanent centre in the DRC young aspirants will have the opportunity to practice and study the Dharma, and spread the Buddhas wisdom throughout the African continent.

Visit the Drolung Internatinal (DRC) Facebook page for more information about this project!

Khenpo Lhabu has a vision of spreading the Buddha Dharma around the world. A few years back, he bought some land in the DRC to build a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. The monastery will help feed, clothe, and educate many young monks and nuns who otherwise would have little opportunity to better themselves in these troubling times in central Africa.

Your donations will help feed and educate the young monks and nuns. Please visit Khenpo Lhabu’s Facebook page for more information on his activities:
